A short 400m across the water from the Dampier foreshore lies “Tidepole Island” or more affectionately known by the locals as Sam’s Island. Named after Sam Ostojich who lived there for over 4 decades from the 1960s. After a significant work injury, Sam retired to the Island which he dearly loved and was even granted a lease by Hamersley Iron Company who later connected running water and power for him.
